Labor and Birth
Home Birth
Home birth is currently offered to Texas residents only. If you live in Bowie, Cass, Gregg, Harrison, Marion, Morris, Nacogdoches, Panola, Rusk,
Sabine, San Augustine, or Shelby county, you are a candidate for a home birth with EdenWay Birth. If you don’t live in one of those counties, it does not mean that you can’t have a home birth with EdenWay, just that there may be another midwife closer to you who would be better suited for your birth.
Home birth clients come to the birth center in Marshall for all of their prenatal care, with the exception of a home visit at 36 weeks. They have one newborn visit at home at 24-48 hours postpartum and the remainder of their postpartum care is provided at the birth center in Marshall.
Birth Center Birth
EdenWay Birth is excited to offer another out of hospital option to mothers who may not be comfortable with home birth or to Louisiana mothers, who are unable to have a midwife-attended home birth due to the lack of licensed midwives in Northern Louisiana. The birth center is located within walking distance of a city park with walking trails and picnic tables and across the street from Good Shepherd Medical Center Marshall. It is centrally located with convenient access to shopping and dining, and clients and families will have use of the birth center’s kitchen during their stay.
Water Labor or Birth
All of our clients have the option of using water for labor or birth. Birth center clients will have a pool available to them for labor or birth. Home birth clients will need to provide their own pool or rent a pool and equipment from us. If you’re interested in laboring or birthing in water or have any questions about it, please bring it up at your consultation. We’ll be glad to discuss it with you!
What to Expect In Labor
As your pregnancy progresses and labor is anticipated, you will be in touch with your midwife for late pregnancy and early labor support via phone. When your labor is established and in an active contraction pattern, your midwife will meet you at your place of birth to provide active labor support. Your midwife will stay with you from the time you are in active labor until two to six hours after your baby is born. Under normal circumstances, your baby will never be separated from you. You will hold and breastfeed your baby immediately after birth, give baby his first bath, and dress your own baby. After baby’s birth, the midwife will perform a newborn exam on the baby to be sure nothing is out of the ordinary. She will provide supportive care for you and baby during the transition period after birth and give you instructions about how to care for yourself and your baby until you see her again at 24-48 hours postpartum.
